If youre looking for some good finger lickin barbecue, Smoky Rose is the place to go. It’s not just another one of your average BBQ joints. They take the best aspects of traditional barbecue and elevate it to the next level through tasteful refinements and flavor pairings that will leave you wanting more.
Located in East Dallas and across from the Arboretum, Smoky Rose recently won D Magazine’s Best of Big Ds: Best Restaurant Patio. Since we are having such a warm winter, we decided to sit on the patio and enjoy the nice 70-degree weather. For colder weather, they have overhanging heaters and can enclose the patio too.

To start, we ordered the brisket queso and the deviled eggs. Whomever thought of putting brisket in queso should win an award! This queso was a creamy blend of cheeses, topped with juicy, smoked brisket and pico de gallo. It was so good that we almost licked the bowl clean!
Next up were the deviled eggs. The deviled eggs are a family recipe here, and the chef alters the color of the eggs using different brines throughout the year. Currently, they are using a beet brine to give the eggs a pink hue, creating an extra flare for its presentation.
For the main course, my guest and I ordered the half rack of ribs and the smoke house duo with brisket and pulled pork.
The smokehouse duo is perfect if you just cant decide on one meat to try. You get your choice of two meats: brisket, pulled pork, smoked turkey, ribs or sausage, plus a side.
Each entrée comes with a side, or you can order them a la carte. We decided on the mac ˜n cheese and the jalapeno kale coleslaw. The mac ˜n cheese was decadent and creamy using gouda cheese topped with panko crips for a nice crunch for texture. The jalapeno kale coleslaw had a fresh and light crunch and didnt have the heavy dressing of a traditional coleslaw, making it the perfect lighter pairing to go with a large plate of barbecue.
Now it was time for the meat!! Warning: the following photos may cause uncontrollable drooling.
Im pretty picky about BBQ ribs, but these are some of the best I have ever tasted. If youve never experienced ribs with meat that falls off the bone, you MUST try these because Smoky Rose has theirs perfected. The meat was tender and juicy with a perfectly smoked crispy layer on the outside. They also make three homemade barbecue sauces that you can choose from to enhance your foodie experience.

Earlier, we had just a small taste of the brisket in our appetizer, and a full serving of it did not disappoint. We got a mix of moist and lean brisket, both of which are equally as juicy. The pulled pork was tender and flavorful enough to eat plain. It’s nice that pulled pork is not mixed in a sauce so you can choose how much and what flavor of barbecue sauce to enjoy with it.

To round out our experience (and our bellies), we finished off with a slice of the chocolate chip pecan pie with Bulleit Burbon glaze. I thought I was tired of eating pie after Thanksgiving, but this one is definitely worth ordering!
Overall, Smoky Rose has an extensive food and drink menu with options to satisfy everyone. Even if youre not in the mood for BBQ, there are multiple salad options, a fish entrée and even a burger. In addition to their normal menu, there is the Chefs Daily Features Menu with four exceptionally prepared entrees including a featured fish dish, a 10-oz bone-in pork chop, sous vide chicken, and an 8-oz filet. We will definitely be back to try one of these featured dishes and their Sunday brunch!
